Northeast Ohio Storm Damage Repair

Hailstorms are among the most damaging events for asphalt shingle roofs and often go unnoticed by homeowners. On shingles, hail leaves circular impact marks where granules have been knocked loose, exposing the darker asphalt mat underneath. On gutters and downspouts, you’ll see round dents that look like they were made with a ball-peen hammer. On metal flashing around chimneys or skylights, hail strikes leave visible dings. Even if shingles appear intact from the ground, hail damage shortens the remaining life of your roof significantly by compromising its UV and water resistance.

High-wind events are the most visually obvious: lifted, curled, or missing shingles along ridgelines and rakes are the clearest signs. But wind damage also shows up as broken seals along shingle tabs, which can allow shingles to flap and eventually separate. After severe straight-line winds, it’s common to find damaged or displaced ridge cap shingles, which protect the most vulnerable part of the roof. Gutter and fascia damage frequently accompany wind events as well.

Lake-effect winters in Northeast Ohio make ice dam damage a regular occurrence. Ice dams form when heat escapes through the attic, melts snow on the upper part of the roof, and then that water refreezes at the eaves where temperatures are colder. As ice builds up, water backs up under shingles and into the decking. Signs include water stains on interior ceilings and walls, icicle formations at the eaves, and lifted or cracked shingles along the lower roof edge. Damaged gutters that pull away from the fascia board are another common result.

Heavy rain alone rarely damages a roof that’s in good condition, but it exposes every weakness a storm has created. After a significant rain event, look for water stains on attic decking, mold or mildew growth in the attic corners, and soft or spongy spots on the roof deck if you’re able to walk it safely. Flashing failures around chimneys, vents, and skylights are common entry points. Clogged gutters from storm debris can also push water back up under the drip edge.
